Things I Find Incredibly Chic

5 random things that I will forever find incredibly chic

Stepping away from social media and outside influences, I’ve taken more notice of the things around me; forming my own likes and dislikes, but also taking particular shine to the silly little things that I find chic (or I suppose just things that I really like ahaha).

Whilst this slightly paves away from our regular “advice & expert” based conversations, I still thought it would be interesting!

Anyways, here are five things that I currently find incredibly chic

One: Hand Written,Wax Sealed letters

Whilst efficient, texting to me is a very impersonal form of communication. There is just something so special about someone taking their time to hand write you a letter and even better, sealing it with a wax stamp. It could be a letter of love or simply a conversation that yes, would’ve been quicker in a phone call or a dm, but it’s just not as meaningful. I love receiving letters and I keep them forever; I also love to send them as it shows how much I care and consider someone. Perhaps you should consider putting down the phone and writing a letter once in a while.

Two: Having a personality (lol)

I’m not sure who popularised the “nonchalant” attitude, but it’s boring! I personally love to show enthusiasm for something and towards people, not only because it makes it easier to converse and connect with others, but it makes life more interesting. Of course you don’t have to spill your entire life story to anyone and everyone who’ll listen, but showing that you care and have interest in yourself; your opinions, as well as the things and people around you is incredibly important. You don’t get any of this from the nonchalant energy that a lot of people choose to present; unfortunately it just insinuates that the person has no substance to them. Having a personality also means having one that is true to who you are, which due to social media and outside influencers is difficult these days. Lot’s of people tend to just go with what’s on trend instead of thinking for themselves or forming their own opinions, and again its boring! Be as unique and as quirky as you want. Be exactly who you are because imagine looking in the mirror and not even recognising yourself because you’ve chosen to copy this internet personality or that influencer?

Three: Afternoon Tea

I find afternoon tea to be very refreshing and much calmer and inviting compared to other social affairs (and to be honest, anywhere with a cup of tea and a sweet treat, I’m absolutely there lol). It’s a great way to take a break in the middle of the day, allowing you to indulge without the pressure of finishing a meal, and since it’s so relaxing, it’s also easier to engage in conversation. I tend to view afternoon tea as a more fashionable version of “meeting up for coffee,” especially since many places have dress codes. As it’s typically served in the afternoon, it’s convenient to “make a day of it” and explore the rest of the area, adding a sense of occasion to an otherwise ordinary day. A few places I’d recommend are The Ritz London, The Dorchester, The Drawing Room at Coworth Park, the Tea Salon at Fortnum & Mason and The Corinthia - but most hotels also offer it.

Four: Wearing heels for casual occasions

As someone who’s been tall for their entire life, I’ve always hated heels because I didn’t want to be any taller, or to “stand out”. I’d typically just wear them for special occasions: birthdays, weddings etc, but recently I’ve gotten into the habit of wearing heels for the most mundane errands and tasks. They elevate even the most boring outfits - ultimately making me feel much better, and starts to make whatever you’re doing feel more important. I’m obviously not gallivanting around town in a pair of 120mm So Kates (because, quite frankly, I would break my neck haha), but a cute pair of slingbacks or just some pointed-toes and jeans to get my nails done or grab my morning chai has recently been my go-to. I’m of course not doing this everyday as I do still love my trainers and other footwear, but on the days that I feel like doing more I’ll opt for heels where I’d otherwise usually pass.

Of course this takes some getting used to, but if this is something you’d like to do, start with a heel height and style that you’re comfortable with, and practice walking around the house first.

Five: Having Hobbies

This year, I’ve taken up a few extra hobbies that not only bring me a lot of joy, but also give me something else to do and think about outside of the regular routines of life. It really takes me back to primary school and the various “after school clubs”, that I was a part of and would spend the entire school day thinking about. I think having hobbies in your 20s is especially beneficial, as it can be difficult to make friends at this life stage. They allow you to meet new people and connect with those you might not otherwise encounter, but who clearly share your interests! Pilates, Lagree or any form of workout class are great hobbies because they have excellent health benefits, but also a class/group setting means that you have lots of socialising opportunities. I’ve met some wonderful ladies from attending pilates classes and we have maintained our friendships outside of the studio! I’ve also pursued fencing and horse riding this year, which I absolutely LOVE! And of course, I am continuing with my saxophone.

These are my own opinions so you don’t have to necessarily agree, but I’d love to know what you’re finding “chic” these days. (Also, perhaps we should make this a series?…)
